I Love to Read Month - Week 2 Highlights

Friday is pajama day!

It is also the deadline to turn in dog stories and/or pictures for the contest.

Friday is also the last day to turn in pictures of your child reading with your dog.  (A stuffed dog or other stuffed animal could work as well!)

Last week, we had more guest readers!

Thanks for coming to read, sis!

One of our students, Evan, was chosen to read with a dog named Penny.  He got to take his book box into a special reading room, sit down next to a friendly dog, and read to her.  Congratulations on being chosen for this fun opportunity, Evan!

We finished our week with a great party.

Keep reading at home and coloring those hearts!

Party Time!

Friday, Feb. 14th was a day packed with celebrations!

We celebrated I Love to Read Month by learning about service dogs.  The students got to see three dogs, learn about them, and even pet them!

Our next sweet celebration was, of course, Valentines Day!  We searched the room for sweet treats.  Each Hershey's Kiss had a number on the bottom, and the students matched the numbers to our hundred chart.

We enjoyed a few games of Valentine Memory Match on the Smart board - great new vocabulary!

The students had a lot of fun entering the "circle of Valentine bags" to distribute what they brought.

We also celebrated the 100th day of school.  We had a "substitute teacher" - Great Grandma Haglin came to celebrate for the day.  Students completed a book of 100 tasks, including thumbprints, writing sight words, stamping, and stickers.

Happy Valentines and 100th Day!

Upcoming February Events

February is an exciting month filled with dog-themed

activities and MORE:

  • Dog Drawing/dog story contest.  Have your child draw a picture of a dog and/or write a story about a dog.  Your child can write the story themselves or they can dictate a story for you to write for them.  Please return these by Friday, February 21st.  The paper to use was sent home in their Wednesday envelopes.

  • Reading minutes:  Please color a heart for every 5-10 minutes of reading.  Students who return this by the end of the month will be entered in a drawing.

  • Please take a picture of your child reading to their dog or a stuffed animal dog and return to school by February 21st.  These will all be displayed in the hallway the night of Reading Fun Night.

  • Friday, February 14th is the 100th day of school as well as Valentine's Day.  Have your child wear red, white or pink.  You may bring valentine treats if you choose, enough for 22 students.

  • On February 24th, each student will get a chance to read "in the doghouse" in the lobby.  They will be reading books with another friend or two from our class, plus a 3rd grade buddy.  We are VERY excited about this!!!

  • On February 27th will be our Reading Fun Night.  Come to school for a hot dog dinner and stay and hear some teachers read books about dogs.  There will also be face painting and tattoos.  This is an amazing night, put it on your calendar!
This month we will also be meeting and learning about

different types of dogs.  We will see and learn about

mushers and dogsled teams.  We also will learn about

therapy dogs and even get to see some agility training dogs

jump through an obstacle course.  Police dogs will also be

coming to our school. If you have any questions about the

activities ahead, please let me know!  Happy Reading.

Excited learners!

Our students are amazing readers!

Strategies to look for at home:
Laying the book down flat
Using one hand to hold the book down and one to point
Pointing to each word as it is read

We are practicing adding!  Students are learning that they don't have to start counting at "1" in order to add two numbers.  They are taught to begin with the highest number and "count on".

We also experimented with spatial reasoning by arranging square tiles.  The only rules - they all have to touch another square, and they all have to be in a group together.
Click here to see what the kids came up with!

If at all possible, send your child's Valentines to school by Thursday, so we can get them in their bags before Friday.

February Reading Minutes

I hope this looks familiar!  Your child received a pink Reading Log for the month of February last week.  His/her job is to continue reading with a parent each night, and to color in one heart for every 5-10 minutes of reading.  This can be time when an adult reads to the child or the child reads to the adult.  Students can keep the Reading Log in their Round Trip Folder.  When all hearts are filled in and I see a parent signature, I will collect the Reading Log.  Students who participate will be entered into a school-wide drawing for a grand prize: riding a Fire Truck to school!
Happy Reading!
