What is Daily 5?
I have mentioned "Daily 5" several times on this blog. It is a program used at Maple Lake Elementary for reading. As the year progresses, your child will be involved in 5 literacy-based activities during our reading block. As they begin to do these independently, I will work with small groups and explore leveled books, guiding each student in his/her personal reading journey.
The Daily 5 are:
Read to Self (we are already great at this!)
Work on Writing (this is what we are practicing)
Word Work
Listening to Reading
Read to Someone
We have made progress in our stamina for our second component of Daily 5: Work on Writing. The students were able to write for 8 minutes straight!
This is what our classroom looks like during Work on Writing:
Many students are at their seats, writing. Some are up and about, getting new letters and words to practice. Students can write about ideas "in their heads", practice one another's names, take picture/word cards to copy, or use a book from our bookshelves to find new letters and words.
Our goal is 10 minutes of stamina for writing. Once they reach this goal, we will introduce the next component: Word Work.
In addition to Daily 5, we have whole-group instruction to learn reading strategies. This week we focused on the book The Three Little Pigs.
Students re-experienced the familiar story and spent time analyzing the characters. "What is the wolf like? How can we tell by what he did in the story?"
